Talking about this vacation will be
easy! I can venture to say that was one of the richest experiences of my life.
At the airport, I was sure that
everything would be fine, but I was still feeling a little nervous. When
I arrived, however, it was all good!
After 20 hours of flying, with a
stop-over in Dallas, I landed in Canada. When I arrived at the home stay where
I would be living, I was greeted by children, parents, and dogs. Within a
matter of hours, I was already settled-in and hungry for information.
Everything around me was new, everything was different to me…it was the exact
fountain that I'd been waiting years to drink from.

That day I went to my school on the
train. I visited a Catholic church and watched part of a ceremony. I was
thankful for coming, and for all the beautiful moments that had yet to come.
melhor ainda. Entre eles estavam brasileiros, chilenos, suíços e coreanos, etc.
I went to the famous library in the city
in the style of a Colosseum, the central modern art museum. I sat on the
staircases in the gallery watching the city and the local market. I visited the
famous streets and perused the incredible stores that sold everything from
electronics to toys. I was lucky, because during that first week I met some
marvelous people that definitely made my trip better. I
Dali
para frente foi só sucesso!
Although I mostly studied all day (9am-5pm), it was totally worth it! I had come to Vancouver to do a general English course, but once it began, I switched to a Business English course which was simply icing on the cake. I was really happy to switch classes, it´s better to me. In the first week I made a remarkable improvement, and I got to fix some words and rules, which magically enhanced my English. After that, everything was successful.

outro o mar. Quase indescritível.
After one week of class, I made some friends and signed-up for the first activity with my school. I went to a canyon called Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver. Awesome place, a short-trip from the city, incomparable energy and a beautiful view! I walked over a wood bridge that crossed the entire canyon. Although I was a bit apprehensive, it ended-up being very safe. The public places in Canada are really well maintained—no trash on the floor, only clean bathrooms, many handrails and signposts—and that made everything better. Leaving the canyon, I went to see the sunset on the English Bay. A mix of buildings from the big city, tulip gardens all along the sea shore, logs of wood spread out across the sand…all between snowy mountains and the other ocean. It was almost indescribable.

The next day, I went to Victoria, a city in the Vancouver islands. I caught a ship to transfer across the Pacific Ocean. The cold wind hurt my skin and the local birds followed our path. Although it was freezing, it was beautiful! You could see all the Canadians trying to grab a little of the sun that had timidly appeared, rolling-up their pant legs. Once there, I visited the Parliament of Victoria, a huge building with a lot of history. I had lunch in front of the parliament and lived like the Victorian people. After leaving there, I went to the Royal BC Museum to see the art and learn about the history of the indigenous North American civilizations. It was chilling!

To finish up, I visited Craigdarroch Castle, the first real castle I had seen in my life. It was built in 1890 (the Victorian Era) and its owner was the Coal Barron Robert Dunsmuir, who died one year after the building was completed. After his death, the castle functioned as a military hospital during the First World War. After this, it acted as a music school, and finally it came to be listed as a Heritage Site/Historic Landmark. All of the family possessions have been collected and are displayed in the house, the rooms reconstructed with minimal alterations. In total there were 39 rooms, and every one chilled me when I would enter them. You can feel the energy of the people who've lived in this place. It was sensational to experience a little bit of this distant history.

No dia seguinte, fui para Seatle no Premium Outlet Sealte para fazer
compras.
The
day after I went to the Premium Outlet Seattle in Washington to go shopping.
With the half tax, the prices were good. I was a little nervous about crossing
the US border, but in the end it was worth it.
amigos durante as aulas.
The next week, there was a new group in
my classroom, new friends, and difficult lessons, some funny and others a flood
of new words. Everyday I picked up the newspaper to read in the SkyTrain (like
a subway in São Paulo, but the rails only cross open places, not underground
ones). Where it had been very hard to understand the stories in the
beginning—further exacerbated by topics pertaining to local problems—after the
first week, everything was easier. I was able to laugh at the stories in
English, and share them with my friends during class.
The public transportation in Canada is
extremely ample and safe. The lines of SkyTrain, Subway, Sea-bus (like ferries
in Brasil) and the network bus work in perfect harmony; they have the best
schedules and good information. It's enough to buy a monthly ticket, according
to the area where you live (the city is divided into areas like a stadium,
there are circles that increase in size from center to edges) that you use for
any form of transit.
a seleção brasileira.
conhecido! Pessoas maravilhosas!
During the week, I used to play with the four kids that lived with me at my homestay, from playing with dolls and strollers to playing Winning Eleven, representing the Brazilian selection. I did some walking around on the neighborhood streets with my host-mom and I enjoyed the beautiful gardens and the calm life of one of the best cities in the world. The other students that lived in the house helped me a lot to adapt. I lived with two Korean girls and one Brazilian girl, I was lucky to have met them. Wonderful people!

centros turísticos do Canadá), Lake Louise e Columbia Glacier Icefield (campo
Aproveitei
demais.
The following week, I enjoyed the local
holiday and went on a trip for four days
in the Rocky Mountains. It's like a mountain that's almost five thousand
kilometers long, which appeared more than 70 million years ago. Inside the mountains
are the Canadian National Parks. I visited some of them that were located in
the province of Alberta—simply marvelous—like Jasper, Banff (one of the
principal tourist centers in Canada), Lake Louise and Columbia Glacier Icefield
(an ice field from glacial era that still exists today; we had to take a
special bus with special wheels to be able cross the ice roads - amazing). I
loved this trip! I played with snow, took a zillion pictures, relaxed while
taking in the view that looked like it should have been framed, admiring the
beauty of snow between the rockies and the pines in perfect
harmony…spectacular! I practiced a lot of english, saw bears, moose, deer,
squirrels, and then went to a little Canadian disco!
The bad part happened when I got back to
Vancouver. I had some sort of allergic reaction, probably the ice from the
icefield burnt my face! It is not only the sun that burns us! I had to stay in
my bed for two days, taking anti-allergy medication (the ONLY drug that I
didn´t bring with me), but in a short time everything was fine!
todos as praias.
Vi show de golfinhos,
morcegos, pinguins, aves, tartaruga gigante e animais marinhos super exóticos!
Valeu muito muito a pena!
The third week, I went to an Outlet in
Vancouver! The prices are amazing and very affordable! It was the best! It is
located at the 22th SkyTrain station and although it was far from my house, it
was worth it.
I spent my Saturday at Stanley Park, the
biggest urban park in Canada and the third biggest in North America. At the
edge of all the beaches there is a huge seawall with a pedestrian walk-way
where it's possible to rent a bike or roller-skates and visit all the beaches. I
did this trip on foot, walking for 8 hours in this park, and afterwards I had
lost some weight….worth it! There is a public pool, restaurants and the
famous Vancouver Aquarium! I saw the dolphin-show, the bats, the penguins, the
birds, the giant turtle, and some super exotic sea animals! It
was nice!
bonitinhos.
30 segundo
de descida de pura adrenalina. Demais!
The last Sunday in the city, I went to
Whistler, one of the principal ski spots in the world. Whistler is like a
little village, with less than 10 thousand people and quaint restaurants and
super cute little stores. It reminds me of a small city called Campos do Jordão
in São Paulo. At Whistler, I took a gondola trip and went down a part of the
mountain using a rubber tire. 30 seconds of falling
down was pure adrenalin. Awesome!
19.
To end the week, I visited the Gaslight
District and Chinatown. I was delighted by all the history and beauty together
in the same place. The Gaslight District was declared a heritage-site/historic
landmark, so the place is really well maintained. At 3:15 everyday, a
70-year-old, 5-meter tall steam clock emits steam and a whistle. Many tourists
stop at the crossing between Cambie and Water st. to see this historic scene
happen.
The streets of the Gaslight have an
incomparable charm: they're wide with old buildings, and sidewalks made of
pottery dating to the 19th century.
Before I came back to Brazil, I was
thrown a farewell party by my homestay family. They had a cake in the shape of
a heart with layer of gummy bears, salad (I said that I love it), cup cakes,
pizza and nachos. I received lots of hugs from the kids, lots of souvenirs and
lots of love! I learned that between the other students that lived in the same
homestay, no one had seen a reaction like this from the family. I
think I did something right!
produtos do meu país.
With the way that I´ve detailed my trip,
I still can´t describe all my sensations. But the most beautiful places that I
visited were there. I loved to do all the activities in class, doing and
watching the presentations in the business class. To eat different foods, to
have a routine completely opposite of the one that I have here in Brazil…being
able to walk around the city everyday after school, visiting different places.
Getting out of school and seeing the sunlight. Realizing the difference between
prices and products from my country. Meeting new people, getting a detailed
understanding of the cultures of Chile, Korea, Germany, Canada…keeping in touch
with people and seeing their eyes, full of emotion after only a short time, at
the moment to say goodbye.
These are priceless moments that no one
can take away from me; memories of things I did and lived ended up being the
biggest gratifications I could have.
I realized that I not only evolved my
english, but myself, my maturity. Some parameters were hidden in my life, and
now they are clear. This trip resulted in changes to my outlook on life that I
will bring with me back to Brazil.
Simply unforgettable! Thank you very
much to all the people that were part of this period in my life. You
will always be remembered!
Parabens, Carol! I told you traveling is one of the best things you can do to evolve as a person, and it seems you've discovered that first-hand! I'm glad you liked the Gaslight district...it's one of my favorite things about Vancouver.
ResponderExcluirHopefully this will be your first travel out of many. Maybe San Francisco next?
I miss you and Daniel muito (tell him I said hello when you see him next)...I'm working on coming back to Brazil, so maybe I'll be seeing you sooner rather than later.
beijos e abraços,
-JD
